What is French certificate attestation?
French certificate attestation is the official legalisation that makes a French-issued document valid for use in the UAE. It runs through legalisation in France by French notaries, the UAE Embassy in Paris, and the final MOFA stamp in the UAE.
Important: a French apostille is not enough. France is a signatory to the Hague Apostille Convention, but the UAE is not a member. So an apostille alone is not sufficient for UAE use — legalisation by French notaries (since 1 September 2025), UAE Embassy (Paris) attestation, and the MOFA UAE stamp are all required.

Why a French apostille does not work on its own here
For a Hague destination, a French apostille would be enough. The UAE, however, is not a member, so UAE authorities do not accept an apostille as final legalisation.
A French document used in the UAE needs legalisation in France (done by French notaries since 1 September 2025), UAE Embassy (Paris) attestation, and finally the MOFA UAE stamp. Commercial documents start a little differently — they are verified by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) rather than a notary. We map the right route for your document before we begin.

How does the process work?
- Local verification (France) — personal and educational documents by a French notary; commercial documents by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI).
- Legalisation (French notaries) — since 1 September 2025, French notaries apply the legalisation through regional legalisation centres, instead of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- UAE Embassy attestation (Paris) — the embassy applies the official UAE stamp.
- MOFA attestation (UAE) — the final verification here in the UAE.

Going the other way? If a UAE-issued document (a degree, birth or marriage certificate, or company papers) must be accepted in France, the order reverses:
- Attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).
- A certified French translation. French official guidance says a foreign-language document must be translated into French before the legalisation process starts.
- Legalisation by the French Embassy in Abu Dhabi, which acts only on documents already attested by the UAE.

French birth certificate attestation for a UAE family visa
Sponsoring a child, registering a birth, or enrolling a child in school in the UAE usually needs an attested birth certificate. French birth certificates go through the same chain as other French documents, but getting the right copy at the start saves weeks.
Which copy to order
France issues a birth certificate (acte de naissance) in three forms:
- Full copy (copie intégrale) — every detail on the record, including both parents. This is the one we recommend for UAE use.
- Extract with parents (extrait avec filiation) — a summary that still names the parents.
- Extract without parents (extrait sans filiation) — name, date and place of birth only. Because it does not show the parents, it is not suitable for family sponsorship.
France also issues a multilingual extract (extrait plurilingue). It is designed for European use under the 1976 Vienna Convention and does not replace the certified Arabic translation UAE departments ask for. Order the full copy instead.
Where to get it
- Born in France — from the town hall (mairie) of the place of birth, online through service-public.fr or by post.
- French citizen born abroad — from the Central Civil Status Service (Service central d’état civil) in Nantes, online or by post.
The request is free. Some private websites charge for it — you do not need to pay anyone to order your copy.
Order a fresh copy for attestation rather than using one you have had for years. Recently issued copies are the safest choice at every stage; we will confirm the date rule for your case before anything is submitted.
The route to the UAE
- 1. Legalisation in France — since 1 September 2025 this is done by French notaries, through regional legalisation centres, instead of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- 2. UAE Embassy in Paris — attests the legalised certificate.
- 3. MOFA in the UAE — the final stamp that makes it valid here.
- 4. Certified Arabic translation — usually required after attestation.

Born in the UAE?
If your child was born in the UAE, the UAE-issued birth certificate does not go through France at all. It only needs the MOFA stamp in the UAE. Here is how UAE-issued and foreign documents differ.
Do your French documents need an Arabic translation?
Arabic is the official language of the UAE, so many government departments and courts also ask for a certified Arabic legal translation once your French document is attested. This must be produced by a translator approved by the UAE Ministry of Justice — a standard or machine translation will not be accepted. - Assuming the apostille is enough — for UAE use it never is; UAE Embassy and MOFA steps still apply.
- Name mismatches — differences between your passport and certificate can cause rejection; tell us early so we can advise.
- Skipping the Arabic translation — many UAE bodies require it after attestation.
- Leaving it late — the chain spans two countries, so start as soon as you accept an offer or set a deadline.
