What is Netherlands certificate attestation?
Netherlands certificate attestation is the official, multi-stage legalisation that makes a Dutch-issued document legally valid for use in the United Arab Emirates. Whether it is a university degree from Amsterdam, a birth certificate from Rotterdam, or your company’s incorporation papers, a UAE authority will only act on it once it carries a recognised chain of verifications — ending with a stamp from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).
That chain runs through notarisation (where it is needed), an apostille from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attestation by the UAE Embassy in The Hague, and the final MOFA stamp here in the UAE. Each stage confirms the one before it, building an unbroken trail of authenticity that UAE employers, universities, courts and government departments can rely on.
Important: a Dutch apostille is not enough. The Netherlands is part of the Hague Apostille Convention, but the UAE is not a member. The apostille confirms your document is genuine — yet on its own it is not accepted for use inside the UAE. UAE Embassy (The Hague) attestation and the final MOFA UAE stamp must still follow.
Why a Dutch apostille does not work on its own here
This is the single most common misunderstanding we see with Dutch documents. Because the Netherlands issues apostilles, many people assume an apostille is the finish line. For most countries it would be — but the UAE never joined the Hague Apostille Convention for this purpose, so UAE authorities do not treat an apostille as final legalisation.
In practice that means an apostilled Dutch document still has to be attested by the UAE Embassy in The Hague and then stamped by MOFA in the UAE before it can be used for a visa, a licence, a court matter, or a school. Why do you need Netherlands attestation?
UAE employers, universities, courts, and government departments require Dutch documents to carry the full chain before they will accept them. You will typically need attestation for:
- Employment and Golden Visas — degree and experience documents for work permits and long-term residency
- Family sponsorship — marriage and birth certificates to bring your spouse and children
- University and school admission — transcripts and certificates for study in the UAE
- Professional licensing — for regulated fields such as healthcare, engineering and education
- Business setup and property — company documents and powers of attorney for licensing, banking and DLD matters
Without the MOFA stamp, any of these applications can simply stall.
How does the process work?
- Notarisation (Netherlands) — a Dutch notary verifies the document. This is mainly needed for powers of attorney, affidavits and certain commercial documents; many public documents go straight to the apostille stage.
- Apostille — Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs — confirms the signature and seal of the issuing authority. This is the step people often mistake for the finish line.
- UAE Embassy attestation (The Hague) — the UAE mission verifies the apostille and applies the official UAE stamp, bridging the document into the UAE system.
- MOFA attestation (UAE) — the final legalisation in the UAE, after which the document is valid across government bodies, courts and universities.

Do your Dutch documents need an Arabic translation?
Arabic is the official language of the UAE, so many government departments and courts also ask for a certified Arabic legal translation once your document is attested. This must be produced by a translator approved by the UAE Ministry of Justice — a standard or machine translation will not be accepted.
