European Documents in the UAE: The Route Checklist

Last updated: 12 October 2026

A document issued anywhere in Europe needs the same four things before a UAE authority will accept it: legalisation in the country that issued it, attestation by the UAE Embassy in that country, the final MOFA stamp in the UAE, and usually a certified Arabic translation. Every EU country and the UK is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, but the UAE is not, so an apostille alone is not enough for the UAE.

The route is the same shape everywhere. The first step is where European countries differ, and that is where most delays start. This checklist covers what to check before you begin, the first step country by country, and how long it usually takes.

Before you start: the checklist

Run through this before anything is sent. Each point is a common reason for a document to come back.

  • You have the original. Attestation works on the original document or an officially issued copy, not a photocopy.
  • It is the right version. Some countries issue several versions of the same certificate. France, for example, issues a full copy and two shorter extracts of a birth certificate; for UAE family sponsorship the full copy is the safe choice. Ask the UAE authority which version it wants if you are unsure.
  • It is recent enough. For birth, marriage and similar certificates, a recently issued copy is the safest choice. If yours is years old, order a fresh one before starting.
  • Names match your passport. A different spelling, a missing middle name or a maiden name can cause a rejection. Tell us about any difference at the start.
  • You know who is asking for it. An employer, a school, a court and the visa system can each want slightly different things. The purpose decides which documents need attestation and whether translation is needed.
  • You know what is already done. If the document already carries an apostille or other stamps, send a photo. Some steps may already be complete.
  • You have planned for translation. Most UAE departments want a certified Arabic translation after attestation.

The route, step by step

  1. Legalisation in the issuing country. This is the step that varies. Depending on the country and the document it can involve a notary or solicitor, a regional authority, the foreign ministry, or an apostille.
  2. UAE Embassy in that country. The UAE mission attests the legalised document.
  3. MOFA in the UAE. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs applies the final stamp that makes the document valid here.
  4. Certified Arabic translation. Usually done after attestation, by a translator approved in the UAE.

The same chain applies to degrees, birth and marriage certificates, police clearances and company documents. Commercial documents sometimes start at a chamber of commerce instead of a notary.

France changed its process in 2025. Since 1 September 2025, French public documents for use abroad are legalised by French notaries through regional legalisation centres. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs no longer does this. Any guide that still sends French documents to the ministry is out of date.

Already apostilled?

An apostille is not wasted. It completes the first step for most European documents. What remains is the UAE Embassy in the issuing country and the MOFA stamp in the UAE. Send us a photo of the document and its stamps, and we will confirm what is left before quoting. Here is how this works for UK documents.

Translation: what it costs

Most UAE departments ask for a certified Arabic translation after attestation. Our legal translation rates are AED 35 per page for Arabic โ†” English and AED 140 per page for other language pairs, such as French, Spanish, Italian or Dutch into Arabic. Government fees apply separately.

Common mistakes

  • Stopping at the apostille. For the UAE, the embassy and MOFA steps still apply.
  • Using an old copy of a civil certificate. Order a fresh one if yours is years old.
  • Sending the wrong version. A short extract where a full copy is needed means starting again.
  • Leaving it late. The chain runs through two countries. Start as soon as you get the request.

You do not need to travel

If you already live in the UAE, you do not need to go back to Europe or post documents between offices yourself. We collect the document anywhere in the UAE, manage every European and UAE step, and deliver it back ready to use.
