Can You Do MOFA Attestation Yourself? An Honest Comparison

Yes — you can do MOFA attestation yourself, and it costs AED 186: AED 150 for the government fee plus AED 36 for courier. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation provides the service directly to the public through its website and the UAE MOFA smartphone application, with UAE Pass login, online payment and courier collection.

We charge AED 220–240 for the same stage. So the real question is not whether you can do it yourself — you can — but whether that difference is worth paying.

The honest answer depends on two things: whether your document is already most of the way through the attestation chain, and how comfortable you are putting an original certificate in the post.

This post sets out both sides properly, including the cases where we would tell you to go direct.

When doing it yourself makes sense

Your document was issued in the UAE. For a UAE-issued document — particularly an eligible digital document with a verification feature — this is a short, self-contained process. The ministry quotes digital attestation as completing within about two hours during official working hours. There is little for an intermediary to add.

Stages 1 to 3 are already complete. If your document already carries the notarisation, home country foreign ministry stamp and UAE Embassy attestation, only the final MOFA stamp remains. That is one submission.

You have one document and no deadline. With time in hand and a single certificate, the process is manageable.

You are physically in the UAE and comfortable with the portal. The submission is online, but it assumes you can read the requirements, identify your document category correctly, and handle courier logistics.

In those situations, going direct saves you a service fee. We would rather tell you that than take a fee for arranging something you could do in an afternoon.

When it usually goes wrong

Your document was issued outside the UAE and has not started the chain. This is the big one. MOFA is the last of four stages, and the first three happen in the country where the document was issued — often while you are several thousand kilometres away. Coordinating a notary, a foreign ministry and a UAE Embassy remotely, in a country you may have left years ago, is where most people’s do-it-yourself attempt stalls. We explain how to tell which route your document is on here.

You have a fixed deadline. Visa appointments, job start dates and university admission cut-offs do not move because a stage took longer than expected. The value of professional handling is not speed at any single stage — it is knowing in advance where the delays occur.

You have a document set rather than a document. A family visa application might involve a marriage certificate, two birth certificates and a degree. Each moves separately and carries its own government fee. Tracking four parallel chains is a different task from tracking one.

Your document needs translation, or you are unsure whether it does. Getting the translation stage in the wrong order is one of the more expensive mistakes available, because it can mean redoing attestation on a document that has already been stamped.

The four mistakes that cost people the most time

These come up repeatedly, and all four are avoidable.

Doing the stages out of order. The chain is fixed: notarisation, home country foreign ministry, UAE Embassy, UAE MOFA. A stamp obtained out of sequence generally has to be redone, because each stage verifies the one before it.

Assuming an apostille is enough. The UAE is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. An apostille alone is not accepted here. People arriving from the United States and Europe are caught by this most often, because in those countries an apostille genuinely is the end of the process for most destinations. It is not for the UAE. The distinction is set out here.

Submitting a laminated document. The ministry’s own rules state documents must not be laminated. People laminate certificates to protect them, then discover the document cannot be processed.

Submitting a copy when the original is required. Originals are required. Certified copies are accepted only where the issuing authority itself certified them.

None of these are complicated. They are simply not obvious until you have hit one.

Side by side: the actual numbers

For a personal or educational document at the MOFA stage only:

Doing it yourself Using us
MOFA government fee AED 150 Same — it cannot be discounted by anyone
Courier AED 36, arranged by you Included
Total AED 186 AED 220–240
Difference — Roughly AED 34–54
You arrange Portal submission, courier booking, tracking, any follow-up A photo on WhatsApp
If the ministry raises a query You diagnose and resubmit Handled, usually without you being involved
Best suited to UAE-issued documents, chains already at the final stage, single documents, no deadline Foreign-issued documents, incomplete chains, document sets, fixed deadlines

Commercial documents sit on a different scale entirely — the government fee there starts at AED 2,000 per stamp, and some documents require two. Full cost breakdown here.

The government fee line is worth dwelling on: it is identical either way. Anyone claiming they can reduce the government fee is describing something that is not possible.

The real reason most people don’t do it themselves

It is not cost, and it is not ignorance of the process. Most people who contact us already know they could submit directly — the ministry’s portal is not hidden.

What they tell us, consistently, is that they are reluctant to book a courier themselves and hand over an original certificate. Often it is the only copy of a degree, a marriage certificate or a birth certificate, and replacing it would mean going back to an institution in another country. Putting it in the post on your own arrangement, and waiting, is an uncomfortable thing to do.

That is a reasonable position, and it is worth naming rather than pretending the decision is about the AED 34–54. What you are paying for is that someone else owns the logistics and answers for the document while it is out of your hands.

If that concern does not apply to you — if the document is replaceable, or you are relaxed about courier logistics — then AED 186 direct is the sensible choice and we would say so.

What we would actually tell you

If you contact us with a UAE-issued digital document that needs a single MOFA stamp and you have three weeks before you need it, we will tell you that you can do that yourself on the ministry’s portal, and point you at it.

If you contact us with a degree certificate from another country that has never been attested, and a work permit deadline in a month, that is a genuinely different situation — and it is the one we exist for.

The distinction we would draw is not “professionals versus amateurs”. It is “one stage in one country” versus “four stages across two countries with a deadline attached”.
